Hip Fractures
When a hip fractures occurs, it happens in the top quarter of the thigh bone (femur). If you experience an injury to the hip socket, it is not considered a hip fracture. Hip fractures are typically caused by direct impact to the side of the hip; commonly associated with a fall. If the bone is weakened by osteoporosis, cancer, or stress injury, the bone will break more easily.
Symptoms include pain in the upper thigh and groin, along with severe pain when the hip is rotated or flexed. Diagnosis of a break is determined by an x-ray of the site. Because these breaks are common in older adults who may not be healthy enough to undergo anesthesia, physicians may recommended bed rest instead of surgery. Otherwise, surgery will repair the damage. It may be necessary to replace the ball at the head of the femur or the entire ball and socket may need to be replaced with a total hip replacement procedure.
Hip Strain
Hip strains occur when the large muscles that hold the hip joint together are stretched and torn. Injuries can be from a fall or blow to the muscle, overuse, or overstretching. Symptoms include pain in the muscle especially when being used, possible swelling, and possible loss of muscle strength.
While diagnosing, our doctors will typically use an x-ray to make sure there are no fractures to the hip. If there are no fractures, rest, ice, compression, and exercise will help heal a strain.
Dislocated Hip
A hip dislocates when the head of the hip bone slips out of its socket in the pelvis. Dislocated hips usually occur from a fall or auto accident. This injury causes severe joint pain and causes the leg to take on an unnatural twisted look. The bones can be manipulated back into place under anesthesia. However, if the bones are broken, it may require surgery.
Hip Injury
The pelvis is made up of bones, ligaments, forming a protective bowl around several organs and large blood vessels. Pelvis fractures can be a serious injury. Most fractures are caused by sports, osteoporosis, auto accidents, crush accidents or falls.
Symptoms include severe pain in the pelvis area. To diagnose a pelvis fracture, our team will use x-rays and CT scans. During diagnosis, the doctor will also examine blood vessels and nerves in the legs for additional damage.
Pelvis injuries from sports are typically less severe and can heal without surgery. Fractures from high-energy trauma are life-threatening due to blood loss and will require surgery.
