What Causes Medial Epicondylitis?

Medial epicondylitis happens when you bend your wrist too far toward your palm. This can happen when using a golf club or pitching a baseball. Other things that could cause golfer’s elbow include:

  • Serving with a lot of force in tennis
  • Weak muscles in the shoulders and wrists
  • Using a tennis racket that is too short, too heavy, or has too tight of strings
  • Having to carry a heavy suitcase
  • Using an ax to chop wood
  • Using a chainsaw
  • Use of other hand tools often and continuously

Symptoms of Golfer’s Elbow

Pain along the palm side of the forearm, from the elbow to the wrist, on the same side as the little finger, is the most common sign of golfer’s elbow. The pain can be felt when the wrist is forced to bend toward the palm or when a rubber ball is squeezed.

Golfer’s Elbow Treatment

Stopping the activity that causes the symptoms is one way to treat golfer’s elbow, and it’s important to stop doing the activity that led to the problem in the first place to give yourself the best chance at recovery. Possible treatments include:

  • Applying an ice pack to reduce swelling
  • Workouts, like in Physical Therapy to get stronger
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Bracing
  • Injections of corticosteroids
  • Rarely do people need surgery
