Leading Midfoot Pain Specialist in Kansas City, MO
Midfoot injuries, often known as Lisfranc injuries, can mimic simple sprains and be difficult for a general practitioner to diagnose. The industry-leading doctors at Orthopedic Health of Kansas City specialize in diagnosing and treating orthopedic pain. They are familiar with the differences between a strain and a more severe injury to the midfoot area, ensuring you get the proper care for your injury.
What is a Midfoot Injury?
Midfoot injuries occur when the complicated mass of ligaments and bones known as the Lisfranc midfoot joint complex is damaged. This region is critical to the stability of the arch of your foot. These injuries can be mild, often mistaken for a sprain. However, midfoot injuries aren’t something you can just walk off. Improper treatment may lead to more pain, and the instability caused by damage to the area can lead to flattening of the foot if not treated properly.
What Causes Midfoot Injuries?
Midfoot injuries are often caused by simple slip-and-fall accidents or sports-related trauma. Something as simple as missing a step and unexpectedly twisting your ankle can injure the Lisfranc region of your foot. These injuries can also result from acute trauma, such as a car crash, falling from a ladder, or dropping something heavy on your foot. People who play sports, have physically demanding jobs, or suffer from conditions that limit feeling in their feet are more prone to these types of injuries. At OrthoKC, we understand these injuries often happen without warning, and our orthopedic walk-in clinics are open 6 days a week to provide care when you need it most.
How are Midfoot Injuries Diagnosed?
Proper diagnosis is integral to recovery from a midfoot injury. Since these injuries can be hard to diagnose, an appointment with one of our orthopedic specialists is recommended. Our specialists will perform a physical exam to check your foot’s shape and stability. Often, diagnostic imaging is required to assess the damage better. Signs and symptoms of a midfoot injury that your doctor will look for include bruising, swelling, and pain. This pain may be made worse by standing or walking. In severe cases, you may be unable to bear weight on the affected foot.
How Are Midfoot Injuries Treated?
Treatment for midfoot injuries depends on the severity of the injury. Cases that don’t include fractures or dislocations in the joint may require little more than rest, OTC anti-inflammatory medications, and immobilization of the injured foot. However, even these cases may require wearing a non-weightbearing cast for 6-8 weeks. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to set bones for proper healing. Post-op treatment plans include wearing a boot or cast for up to 3 months, pain management, and physical therapy. Contact us to learn more.
